Back in the early 90's Entertainer’s Network for a Better Atlanta (ENBA) was formed to bring together and educate the music community here in Atlanta. People who were around in those days are still talking about the impact that ENBA had on the music community and the residual impact that is still felt today. According to Al Burroughs, the founder of the group, the enthusiasm for ENBA still lingers. “14 years after our last event I’m still running into people who are asking me to start up the organization again. I had no idea how much of a force ENBA had become.” With that in mind the decision was made to “Just do it”!!! The Monday night meetings will mirror the meetings from 14 years ago with some small but positive changes.
1) What’s goin’ on...
The meeting will open with information regarding any seminars, conventions, showcases, conferences, etc. that you may not be aware of.
2) The 3 minute Rush
Everyone in attendance will have 3 minutes to get 3 names and numbers from 3 people in the room that they do not know. Then take a few minutes during the week to call and talk to those 3 people.
3) Listen up!!!
This part of the meeting will consist of our song critiques. 3 songs will be anonymously selected and played for the group. All forms of music are welcome. Each song should be no longer than 5 mins. All songs should be submitted before 6:40 p.m. Everyone in attendance will be given a scorecard consisting of 10 categories with a possible score ranging from 1-10 in each category. 100 points total. Possible categories might include lyrics, production, hook, would you buy this song, etc... The name of the artist or the song will not be announced. Radio (clean) mixes only!!! At the end of the meeting all of the critique sheets will be given to the person who brought in the song to be critiqued. This is one sure fire way to find out what people “Really” think about your song.
4) Turn me up!!!
This part of the meeting will consist of our live performance critique. Same scoring format with some changes in the categories due to the live aspect of the critique. 50% of the critique scoring will be for the song the other 50% will be for the live performance. There will be only 1 performance, no longer than 5 mins., that will be critiqued per meeting. And again, radio (clean) mixes only.
5) Reality check
This is the guest speaker portion of the meetings and a lot of times the most interesting. We don’t do the panel thing! We have one guest and we try to get as deep as we can into that persons profession. Potential speakers include tour managers, artist managers, various major and independent record label executives and employees, record store owners and managers, radio station program directors and DJ’s, P.R. specialists, concert promoters, recording artists and producers, and the list goes on and on... If you want to know what really goes on in the entertainment business, this part of the Monday night meetings is the ‘you gotta be there part”.You may or may not like what you hear but at least you can get the truth. Knowledge is power!!!
6) Soooo, What do you do???
Every meeting is closed out with networking. This part of the meeting is probably one of, if not the most important part of the meeting. Everybody knows that who you know can have a big impact on how far you go in the entertainment business. This along with the simple fact that you never know who knows who means that meeting as many people as you can is crucial. Period!!!
